According to the USMC a 7.63x39 round will penetrate 36" of sand, unless sand is wet or packed tight. Would your 5.56 penetrate 36" of sand? That's why USMC cannot rely on single width sandbag and our opponents can. Doesn't sound like a big difference unless you're the guy filling the sandbags at the end of a long day.

@esh325 Correct, most people jump on the fact that chrome lining = rust resistance and longevity but as long as you take proper care of your barrel, civilian semi auto use, especially with non-corrosive shouldn't wear it down as drastically. I heard Yugos are more accurate since their barrels don't heat up as fast.

Honestly they could make the AK much more accurate but the whole idea was to make a rugged rifle that was cost efficient. (thicker barrel, milled reciever, etc.) However, they do have an AK74 and AN94 that was the answer to all those issues. The Yugo AK variant was probably the best AK47 type rifle ever made. Quite possibly even better than its Russian "father".
