Paramount's electrical system sounds reminiscent of Marsh Laboratories's system, or Grey Gull's system. Both produced a distorted sound, possibly using a telephone wire.

What a historical find! In 1991 lead singer Ira Tucker of the world famous Dixie Hummingbirds told me in an interview that he was heavily influenced by Norman "Crips" Harris, lead singer of the Norfolks. Tucker said the NJQ, who were noted for their distinctive harmonies, were "fifteen years ahead of their time." I don't know whether Harris is singing on this recording. Thanks very much, kr103, for posting it.

Glad you like it. Harris is on this side, although most probably not on lead. As far as I know, he joined the Norfolks in summer 1921 when original high tenor Buddy Archer left the group. So I guess he is the highest voice on this record, while Otto Tutson still sings lead. Tutson left the group in the late 1920s or early 1930s, however, and I guess that's when Harris took over the lead part. I hope to post one of their 1930s recordings soon, where Harris certainly is the lead.
