Want to know where only the locals go and tourist never find? WOW, it even gets better in this one with hot springs, lava walk, volcano, steam vent honeycones, whew! Enjoy!!
Those lava tubes are below ground, you cannot see them, and tho most of the ground is hardened already, your next step could be your last. Safest to squat down and feel the ground with your hands. If it feels hot, you just might be right on top of a tube so slowly back up and leave then count your blessing but its an awesome site to see. Can't believe they didn't go to the boiling pots or the caldera etc. But Aloha Big Island I miss you. I lived there 7 years in Mountain View.
Have to be so careful there walking on the new lava. A japanese tourist walked out to see the new flow back in the 90's but when walking an underground lava tube had formed and when he stepped on what looked like normal hard dried lava on the surface, the ground cracked open and he fell right into the hot flowing lava below in the tube and he was killed. there was nothing his friends could do. He died quickly of course. Lava is sneaky, not the lava you can see, but the lava you can't see .
man-made warm pond heated by natural lava vents with ocean entry waters, champaign ponds, tide pools, carrying flashlights out to the lava is wise, best to stay on paths marked by forest service otherwise, yes there are egg shells spots and lava tubes and yes bench marks by the ocean that you can fall into and off of 2007 was known for large explosions and tonnes of toxic fumes, smart to have bandana over face, dust mask, etc. Steam vents were bulldozed over and not preserved well since.
glad you got a tour, but sorry to say, there are reasons you really shouldn't try to walk out toward the where the lava hits the ocean - - it gets dark pretty fast and you could lose your way back - - island safety tips to remember!
