PLEASE READ THIS - This is a heavily-edited version of the lengthy Sadie Hawkins Day sequence from Li'l Abner (1959). The film starred Peter Palmer as Li'l Abner Yokum, Leslie Parish as Daisy May and Stella Stevens as Appassionata Von Climax. The statuesque Julie Newmar played Stupefyin' Jones, a female "robot" with the power to stop men dead in their tracks. Five feet eleven Newmar had an IQ of 135 and was best know as Rhoda the Robot in "My Living Doll", and as the first Catwoman on the 60s "Batman" TV series. Ms Newmar also features in Fifties Cheesecake Dance No. 28.

The film was directed by Melvin Frank and Nelson Riddle contributed original music. And yes, that's Jerry Lewis in a cameo appearance.

I am always looking for new ideas for this series. If you have any suggestions please don't hesitate to drop me a line.

  • julie newmar is stupyfin jones and jerry lewis did a cameo as the guy dazzled by her charms--he played itchy mccravich

  • Obviously, no one reads the "PLEASE READ THIS" notice attached to this video ( top right). It contains a mini-biography of Julie Newmar.

  • Was it intentional that Julie Newmar was dressed a la Bettie Page?

  • I guess it's a possibility, but my guess is that it is sheer coincidence. Bettie Page is merely the most well-known 50s model of the contemporary era, but the outfit she wears was fairly common attire amongst cheesecake models of the day.

  • She is gorgeous. I think I will have bangs cut my hair is long like that too

  • That sounds like a very noble gesture - attempting to make yourself look like Julie Newmar. Good luck with it.

  • Wow, I haven't seen Lil' Abner since I was 14 I think. Thanks for posting; interesting series.

  • This musical is literally a cartoon on stage. I love it!!

  • Bring back Sadie Hawkin's day. I wanna be chased by women.

  • amazing... I has got to gets me this here musical on dvd, yessir

  • It's kind of amazing when you stop and realize that over fifty years after the fact you are sitting here watching Julie over and over again. How did nature ever get that much woman into one person? I don't think there is any question that natural female pulchritude reached it's zenith during the 1945-75 time period. The likes of Julie, Sophia Loren, Anne Margaret, Raquel Welch, et al. will likely never be repeated.

  • I'd seen a hundred pictures of Stupefyin' and never really got the point -- until I saw her here in motion. Holy.....

  • whoa thats jerry lewis!!!

  • Thanks Catgirl6. And if you look at that same group with Valerie you'll see in the red checks with her hair up in ponytails a very young Beth Howland, who later played Vera on TV's "Alice".

  • Look close kiddies--that's Valerie Harper in the orange dress (Rhoda Morganstern on the Mary Tyler Moore Show)!
