This guy doesn't know the difference between tension, torsion, stress and stress relieving. He actually tells us the little popping sound is the tension being released by teh wheel. No, it isn't, it is the sound of torsion being released in the spoke. Ignorant stuff like this perpetuates wheelbuilding myths that don't help newcomers,

also on the bench method (or chair in this example) you should also push down about 20 lbs on each side, do this evenlly and squarley otherwise you will end up with a hyperbolic parabola =)

you find when the stress is correctlly removed, you will no longer hear pinging coming from those spokes that you relived tension just from (as opposed of hearing it on your first ride w/in the first .35 mile) - well done!

Mr Sheldon Brown used an old crank arm stick to the cross spokes in order to relieving stress in new built wheels.
Sounds crazy, but it works. My last built wheel had DT Swiss Metal Matrix Composite spokes in it, still with a lot of tension left initially after built. I reliefed it with a left crank arm.
This is the difference between mass production and custom built wheels. The extra attention pays off when the bike rolls on trail and the wheel stays true for good.

Thanks alot dude, these are the best wheel vids on the net, however the guy in my local bike shop said on the final turn of a nipple you should back of a 1/4 turn just to take the twist out of the spoke, does anyone know if this actually makes a differance and how important it is to do this???
