No. The idea in a situation that is NOT full combat is to train from a non ready stance. You do not walk around ready to fight, so you should train from a stance where you do not expect to be attacked.
Sig, You and I tease each other a lot. And it is killing me to not agree with some of the comments. However untrue they are. I think that you are doing just fine in the demo considering you pick up a stick about every two years. But if someone chased you into "any" wilderness with a stick....I think if they chased you long enough, you could pry their stick out of their cold dead hands and add it to your collection. No. He is moving his stick to the ready position which in in the center of your body. By having his stick where it is, he is prepared for any angle an attack may come :)

why is he putting his stick down at his side after every technique? shouldn't he keep it up and ready to block/strike?
