坂東玉三郎 「日高川入相花王」 Tamasaburo "HidakagawaIriaiZakura"

This is the story of Kiyohime, who met a travelling priest Anchin. Kiyohime fell for Anchin but the priest left for the Dojoji temple. Kiyohime was furious and transformed into a serpent to pursue him. This video shows Kiyohime crossing the Hidakagawa river as a serpent to pursue her lover.
This is a very famous bunraku (puppet) play, and here, Tamasaburo's movements were those of a puppet.

I'm sorry but I can't find any of this in video stores. Breaks my heart. I've tried to turn my wife and kids on to kabuki and this type of theater. Suggestions? It's all wonderful.

Tamasaburo is a freakin' GENIUS!! His every move looks exactly like the Bunraku puppets. Just glorious!

this isn't Noh, even though a Noh mask is used...this is a cross between Bunraku (the priest who is crossing the river) and really good Kabuki (the actor is using a acting style called ningyo buri...imitation puppet)
