"White Christmas" was composed in 1940 by Irving Berlin who was reportedly poolside at a hotel in Phoenix, Az. Once he completed the song, he supposedly exclaimed to his secretary, "Grab your pen and take down this song. I just wrote the best song I've ever written — heck, I just wrote the best song that anybody's ever written!" And based on sales of this song as recorded in 1942 by Bing Crosby, Irving Berlin did just that since. Bing Crosby's version remains the biggest selling single release worldwide of all time. The song has been covered many times, and particularly noteworthy was this recording from 1954 by The Drifters. Perhaps, second only in popularity to Bing's, Bill Pinkney is the bass voice you hear and Clyde McPhatter's is the high falsetto for The Drifters. Since this recording was rarely played on mainstream radio in the mid-1950's, it never became as popular as it did years later once rhythm & blues became more of an accepted genre on radio in the U.S.

It's a lasting part of American culture now. I play it several times a year; sometimes even in July.
