Here's another tip...just something I find handy. There's probably at least one song you know off by heart so well you can recall the pitch really well. If you know the first note you can use that to gauge the key by ear. For example, I can hear the first note of 'The Boxer' by Simon and Garfunkel. That note is a G, so I use that to work out where the note I'm listening to is.
