I still think it's 8.

@malcfifty The axiom is incorrect! which is that the Guys who is quicker is going to just sit around doing nothing once he completes his half..
That wasn't stipulated!
FYI, apart from dethwing's fairly lucid process. You can solve it graphically too..where each man will be represented by a line with gradients or slopes (±)1/3 and 1/5 (in opposite direction of the other). the point of their intersection is the answer!..do it!
x-axis-Time(hrs)
y-axis-Percentage of WORK..(%)
ans:1.875!

@malcfifty "answers of above 3 hours are clearly not reasonable."
yeah..except that it was not >3hrs!
Ans. is 15/8=1.875 hrs!

This is an Average Equation

This is the best part of the movie.

"8 sounds good to me.."

@houseofaction cont. all put it this way when there is no one there to push you. you sometimes dont work as hard when there is people there you naturally work harder because you have to keep up the pace. my dad has been in construction for years and back in the day him and 3 other men could build an entire garage from the concrete up all the way to drying in the roof in one day. and that was with hammers not nail guns.
-
@malcfifty the entire math is based on the assumption that together they could do it faster which isnt always the case. sometimes when you have to people both begin to work at a slower pase just because they know they will eventually get it done. sometimes when multiple people are working together they work even harder then they would by themselfs ie guy A might work twice as hard and guy B might work 3 times as harder meaning they might get it done 5 times as fast. cont

A guy rides into town on Friday, stays three days, and leaves on Friday. How does he do it?

@bigpipestyle His horse's name was Friday!

The explanation is essentially correct, but a little wordy. Work = Time * Rate
Since there is 1 house, the respective rates are 1/3 and 1/5 "House per hour".
The total rate together is (1/3) + (1/5) = 5/15 + 3/15 = 8/15. Hence:
1 = (8/15)* T. Multiply both sides by 15/8 and you have the result.

@dethwing Fair enough! Succinct and to the point, though I think it's worthwhile looking at what constitutes a reasonable answer. When one fellow can do the job by himself in 3 hours, answers of above 3 hours are clearly not reasonable.

4 hours sounds right. 2 guys average between them. 5 + 3 = 8 / 2 = 4hrs
crusader037972 1 year ago
@crusader037972 If 1 guy takes 5 hours, 2 should do it in 2.5 hours. If 1 takes 3 hours, 2 should take 1.5 hours. The two work at different paces, but the answer has to be in the range 1.5 to 2.5 hours!
