Stag-o-lee

According to some sources, Stag Lee was a person named Lee Sheldon. Lyons and Sheldon (Lee) were friends. Both it seems had been drinking and were feeling in exuberant spirits. The discussion drifted to politics, and an argument was started, the conclusion of which was that Lyons snatched Lee's hat from his head. The latter indignantly demanded its return. Lyons refused, and Sheldon drew his revolver and shot Lyons. When he fell to the floor Lee took his hat from the hand of the wounded man and coolly walked away. Lyons eventually died of his injuries. Sheldon was tried, convicted, and served prison time for this crime.

Never heard this song before. There was a similar song in the '50's not sure who did it. What tuning are you using. It sure sounds nice.

I have seen a reprint of the newspaper article. Lee Shelton did pull a gun and shoot Billy Lyon (or DeLyon) on or about Christmas day, 1895, in a bar in the red light district of St. Louis. Lyons must have died fairly quickly, because it was reported the next day as a murder. Shelton, or Sheldon, had ruined Billy's derby, causing Billy to grab Lee's Stetson. Was it over the Stetson? Billy's step brother-in-law had killed, or caused to be killed, a friend of Lee's some years before.
