An explosion has ripped apart a shop in Randwick this morning, with witnesses reporting hundreds of people running for cover.
The grocery store - Food For Less at Royal Randwick Shopping Centre, in Belmore Road - has been evacuated.
Around two dozen people were rushed outside. It is not clear if there are any casualties.
There have been unconfirmed reports of several youths "in tracksuits" hanging around inside the business then running off before the blast.
Witnesses who have contacted The Daily Telegraph Online said they saw as many as five fire engines rush to the scene.
"Police cars were also screaming down the road,'' one witness said. "There was smoke everywhere, smoke was coming out of the shopping centre.
"They closed off the shopping centre. Buses were unable to get down the road. Nobody seemed to have any idea what was happening - there was just loads of smoke."
NSW Fire Brigade Superintendent Craig Brierley said a number of triple-0 calls were also received around 10am.
"The fire is in the rear of one of the supermarkets," he said.
"Crews wearing breathing apparatus are inside."
Supt Brierley said hundreds of people had been evacuated from the large centre, with four fire trucks and a Hazmat crew on scene.
He was unable to confirm reports of an explosion.
A witness at the scene said thick, white smoke filled the ground floor of the centre while shoppers were evacuated.
"It was quite toxic and unpleasant to breathe in," she told AAP.
The fire has caused traffic disruption, with Belmore Rd closed between Alison Rd and High St.
