La "Rapsodia sobre un tema de Paganini" fue compuesta en la Villa Senar, una propiedad que Rachmaninov tenía en Suiza. Esta obra es un ciclo de veinticuatro variaciones sobre un tema del Capricho nº 24 para violín del célebre violinista italiano Niccolo Paganini (1782-1840). Curiosamente, la obra no comienza con la presentación de la melodía del Capricho sino con una variación de la misma.
