Sweeping up a long drive past a traditionally garbed custodian to a Palace Hotel in India always gives me a thrill. And then, being shown into a huge suite big enough for 20, knocks my sandals off.
The Balaram Palace Hotel was built by... (Are you ready for this?)...His Highness Zubd-ul-Mulk Dewan Mahakhan Nawab Sir Taley Muhammad Khan Lohani...between 1922-1936. Just call him "Maha" for short. This 29th ruler of Palanpur used this palatial palace as his hunting retreat. Doesn't everyone?
It is now a grand hotel with 22 rooms. I really shouldn't call them "rooms" since each is a huge suite. If you so choose, new Royal Tents have been added to the facility. Our suite was called the "Platinum Room" and located in the main palace.
One caveat. As beautiful as the palace was, the high-ceiling rooms were freezing both day and night. We spent two nights asking the staff to add even more blankets to the bed. It got to the point that four blankets were so heavy, we could barely move under them.
