This album is so beautiful. Buy it. I also love Art's version of Gee Baby Ain't I good to you. Invitation was originally written for a really sexy Lana Turner movie under the title of a Life of Her Own. That movie was so X rated for its time the moral standards clause almost prevented its release. It had to be rewritten over and over again it was so dirty for its time. .
I like it better at this tempo because it retains more of the moody melancholic atmosphere of the song as originally conceived. That fits better because it was part of a film score for a story of illicit love and adultry. I love Joe's playing of it too, but not the tempo they take it at and Blakey is so much of a better drummer than Jack DeJonette too. Lee's playing on this is outstanding both in the bright and dark passages. The guy was a prodigy.
Never heard it like this before. WAY better than the faster tempo stuff I've heard except for maybe Joe Henderson's. And how cool is that feel on the bridge?
Interesting how this early version runs at a slower tempo than many of the modern interpretations ... chart has a completely different feel when the tempo kicks a little
Amazing love the bass feel and the bridge, not the biggest Curtis Fuller fan though

God, Lee Morgan's muted trumpet sounds sensual!

@kingpleasure I didn't mean to slight Wayne, because his solo is simply beautiful. What great tone he has.
