Fun story Mike. It's so valuable to work as a team. I've found that there is a limit to how much any one leader can do, at some point they need other people's help and that's much easier to accomplish if they have a great team.

If being part of a team and loosing your individuality makes you try harder, then Communism would work better as a productive force than any other system. In fact the opposite is actually true in human nature. The greatest of human achievements and brilliance have been individual and not group efforts.

You just said it is common sense and explained how you intuitively though about it. You did not provide any empirical evidence. Diffusion of responsibility happens often, as proved by the Ringelmann rope experiment and a bunch of other studies.
