GDRpr Background: The council had received many complaints from residents about the recycling bags it had asked them to use they kept blowing away. As part of a new recycling scheme, the council replaced the bags with new, blue recycling bins.
Objective: To get the recycling message and details of the new blue bins across to residents, particularly younger people and other hard-to-reach sections of the community, who would not read a leaflet or the local paper.
What we did: We created the idea, scripted, filmed and edited a quirky and entertaining video to get the key messages across, focusing on a style which would appeal to key audiences and, most importantly, WOULD BE WATCHED!
Result: The video was watched 3,000 times on YouTube in just a few days and has generated significant positive media coverage, as well as being shown in the local community. The video was shown to wide acclaim by chief executive Donna Hall as part of her presentation to the LG Comms annual conference (The Route to the Top) in Sheffield in May and the council employee featured in the video was interviewed on BBC TVs The Politics Show.
The video was the main story on the front page of the local newspaper as well as generating widespread publicity in other media, such as local government press.
It has also allowed the council to get valuable feedback through the comments posted by viewers.
