Internationally acclaimed Australian saxophonist Amy Dickson in her music-video for Philip Glass' Violin Concerto No 1 (1st movement) . This track features on her second album called Amy Dickson: Glass, Tavener, Nyman which is available now from Sony Music / RCA Red Seal. Having arranged the piece for saxophone, Amy then had to spend a further 6 months learning how to circular breath (a technique where you can both inhale and exhale air at the same time) in order to actually be able to play it!
This 'stripped down' video was filmed exclusively by the award winning music channel C Music TV.

Circular breathing takings months, if not years to master. Don't discredit her, or her mastery of a very difficult and complex skill.

how is it not discrediting to a professional artist to say something they worked on for 6 months is easy and "takes 5 minutes"? How about you read a little closer..

Some people seem to be able to get the basic technique of circular breathing down almost immediately, however from my experience they can't sustain it for more than a few breaths and can actually just play a normal long tone for longer. It seems to be like my experience with altissimo where I learned high G really easily with good intonation in a couple of minutes but then took months to get above that, its easy to fool yourself if you do well to start off with.

She can clearly play - so how about a saxophone concerto? There's plenty of them, I don't know why many saxophonists feel they have to play music not written for the sax in order to gain any kind of recognition. This is a violin piece.... it sounds pretty good on the sax, but both the sax and violin can play more than endless arpeggios..... As a saxophonist myself I want to hear sax music!!

I am a violinist. But I confess, that this piece gets better on sax, except for the part with double strings (double stops)
