Earlier this month, Taiwan restarted official talks with China after a 10-year hiatus. At that time, Chinese officials said they would consider allowing Taiwan some kind of participation in the World Health Organization. The Presidential Office responded cautiously to Thursday's news however.
Beijing's top official for Taiwan issues, Wang Yi, was quoted as telling a Japanese member of parliament that unification with Taiwan would bring advantages to Tokyo.
According to the reports, Wang called the Japanese public's lack of consensus on the benefits of unification "regrettable."
