the real issue with a prius is not mechanical - and it is not an issue of which is better or worse - diesel or hybrid - it is that PRIUS - has become the icon for the type of person that drives one - even more so than other cars - so if you think it represents who you are - it is the right car for you - as their are both positive and negative aspects to that identity charaterization - see the reality TV show "Living With Ed"
@GarrettKeetley Yes, generally diesel engines are more efficient than gas, however they are not as efficient as the hybrid powertrain. Have you driven a Prius before? My dad has an '05 Jetta TDI that I have logged quite a few miles in, and the best it has ever done was 50 MPG on a trip. Of course, the display said we were getting almost 60 MPG, but those things are notoriously unreliable. When we filled up and divided the miles driven by gallons used, it was only 50 mpg.
@GarrettKeetley What diesel car are you driving that gets better fuel economy than a Prius? A worn out, 20 year old VW or 'Benz diesel that spews black smoke and will disintegrate in an accident? The PD and later VW Jettas can barely flirt with 50MPG, something the Prius does with ease, and on cheaper fuel to boot!
@Firagax2 So when challenged by the fact that your "solution" is a con-artist and convicted fraudster your response is insults? I'm sorry your "solution" couldn't prove his 'discovery' in court, let alone a scientific journal, university, or independant lab. But hey... for the laugh... why don't you tell us which of the four forces is the basis of power production in this perpetual motion machine / endless source of energy?
@Firagax2 Lovely... conspiracy theorys? Meyers was convicted of fraud for lying to his investors about his fuel cell claims -- which clearly violate the first and second laws of thermodynamics. He repeatedly refused any independant testing. Telsa (while inventing a number of AC uses of electricity) never discovered any new power sources.
@qazjonny Wrong. Electric motors are more efficient, but that in no way solves the power production issue. We've already dammed most rivers and wind and solar are highly inefficient. A solar panel makes about 0.5kwh/sq meter (in a sunny local), so a small car would need about 100x100 meters worth of solar panels (not even considering transmission and storage losses). There are 250 million cars in the US. That would be 500 million football fields filled will solar panels.
BMW is worse then...they always have these 2 grill things right at the front of the bonnet on every car. Some ppl think its elegant, I think its not dat good looking and they need to re-design it. =)))

Stop lying and get an education.

Hybrid to electric is the way!
The earth will run out of diesel and petrol soon, but u can always get electricity somehow! lol (sunlight blah blah blah)
duno y those european car makers still bother to produce diesel? time to invest in electric technology!
