Shooting the military 5.56 mm 64 grain tracer, M856 from Federal. Targets were water jugs at 200 and 300 yards. Slow-motion segments included for both distances; no audio. I used the scoped Bushmaster Varminter as I wanted to keep the shots within a very well-defined target zone as opposed to spraying shots all over the place.

SAFETY PRECAUTIONS TAKEN: Nearly 4 inches of rain past several days; ground was saturated. Cleared area within the immediate area of the targets down to the dirt. Prior to the session, poured water in and around a much larger area, approx. 1,000 square feet. The greatest majority of jugs were hit during the shooting session. All flare-ups and/or richochets from the session extenguished themselves immediately due to the favorable ground conditions. Within minutes of the last shot, I saturated the immediate target area again, and remained on-site for an additional hour. Over 30 jugs of water were used for the test and additional ground saturation.

  • How many acres do you need to safely shoot 5.56MM rounds on your property. Like how many yards radius to shoot on ll angles.

  • @tyu30

50-80 yards on soft targets, 100-150 yds minimum for steel. I am limited shooting my AR at home, which is why most of the AR vids are on private land with acreage. That having said, just because I can shoot 80 yds in my backyard, I can also do so due to the surroundings.....and culture. Everyone shoots around here.

  • I like how some of the bullets "stick" to the target and you can still see them glowing in the distance :)

Would love to see you light a campfire this way from 200+ yards

LOL You absolutely read my mind. I've been planning to do just that for several months, but the ground conditions never jive with my schedule. I don't like shooting these in dry conditions.

  • Sir

It would be great if you recorded the tracers from the receiving end.

Pointing the camera on your position from at least 200 yards and shoot at a target nearby. I think it would look awesome and give you extra viewers, there's nothing like that on utube still! Take care!

I tried this and it didn't work. Even used multiple camera angles.

  • HELLO AGAIN IT IS FPS RUSSIA .... BRBABABABABABABA BOOM!

  • what size is your rifle? (barrel length)

  • sweeeet lol

  • how much are tracer rounds? I think they're illegal around here. (delaware)

  • do you live in southern middle tennessee because it looks like it

  • @BasementProjects Not exactly but you can easily mistake one for the other. You can also technically chamber one round in another's chamber. IIRC, 5.56 basically has a higher pressure limit and longer leade, so you can get away with shooting .223 in a 5.56 chamber but not the other way around. 5.56 cases are typically thicker so you have less volume inside the cartridge and therefore 5.56 take different load data than .223.
