Reefari had a quiet day and unreel weather and of course decided to go for a quick fish, here's the report, not bad for a half day trip with some great cod caught on lures. Also in the middle of a reef closure so all fish were released, and were very grateful. The Berkley Gulp, 7 Nuclear Chicken had just reached the bottom and within seconds was well and truly smashed, the Nuclear Chicken went off all right!! A good battle followed and a nice large Goldspot (also known as an estuary cod) reluctantly surfaced. We were right in the middle of a closed reef season, perfect weather and still keen to wet a line, game plan was to target some Giant Trevally on lures and troll for Spanish Mackerel. Luckily for this Goldspot Cod he was quickly released after a few happy snaps. After a couple of drifts, our secret spot was firing and with two more Goldspot cod caught and a couple of nice Nannygai, which also unfortunately for us had to be released, it was time to call it quits and head further afield. All we were getting were quality reef fish, not the trevally we were chasing, Tuff I Know.

One of the most exciting forms of fishing is chasing GTs with Poppers, and huge surface strikes the norm. Working one of our favourite rocks, and GT hangouts, two 20kg monsters came up for a look and quickly made short work of the popper, a quick burst of drag and that was it, Gone!! GTs dont muck around and lasted all of about 30 secs. Tony was left Speechless, and blown away!! GTs will quickly find any weak links, and the 50lb braid just wasnt up to the task. 80lb + is well worth considering for this type of brutal, take no prisoner style fishing.

With more enthusiasm, poppers were worked along the edge, where fishing Journo Lee Brake, cast a popper into No Mans land, a beautiful cast parallel to the rocks face up a deadly cove. I even commented hed be in trouble if he hooks up in there, when a flowery Cod quickly came up and hammered the red and white Cultiva popper. Amazing stuff and quite rare to catch on a popper, Made my day!! More photos and once again another lucky cod, had to be released. Was great to see and even better to let go and see him power off, wondering what that was all about.

It was a great morning trip out with the guys and had to head back unfortunately, no fish in the esky, but no-one cared, Some awesome fishing and action on the plastics and poppers, some top quality fish, and a great time had by all.
Please subscribe for the latest fishing news, action and more great video's to come.
Cheers Greg

  • why are you letting them go away? i dont know a lot but i know that some areas alow you to fish but not killing the fish and taking with you! but why nw, i know it is a hobby but they are big fishes !

  • On this particular day, it was closed fishing for Coral reef fin species, so all coral reef species have to be released and cod were classed under this. They're were some great fish taken on plastics and lures, especially the Flowery cod, smashed a popper a metre of the rocks, so was a great capture. We do catch quite a few cod with some big ones well over 20 kilo's, you may see in some of our other videos,

    Cheers Greg
