Do you have Pomona 2001? Cause that was my favorite Pomona show! :) I lost the dvd for that year! :'(
-
ahaha in the band room under the tv, remains one copy of the state performance of rite of the machine. the finals one to be specific. i prefer it honestly. but ehh. lol so if you want to see it go to pomona cus its there. =)
-
I like the heart beat at the beginning.
-
@inplsartist I mean compress an 8:00-10:00 minutes
-
@fatovamingus you are right. It is a very great piece of art. I understand about Firebird to. I did like the part of the show where the band is in the back side and then comes forward.
-
@inplsartist I wouldn't say the Rite of Spring is designed poorly...I would say it's too ambitious for corps and marching bands. It's too ambitious for most symphonies. I respect anyone who attempts to work with it in drum corps or bands vs. the typical Firebird finale but you're right....it never REALLY works, does it. You're very interesting!
-
@fatovamingus I just feel that the show should have stayed with its original plan of the show instead of making it more "friendly". Marching band or DCI is a performing art that should be reflected as such. Very few groups do that or stay with the same thing but it starts to become rigid and stale.
-
@fatovamingus interesting. But I think the rite of spring is still designed poorly when it comes to making an 8-10 minute show. It is a very dark piece even today. I don't like censorship or when judges say a show is "too dark". Now alot of bands do basically the same type of show that is based on positive thinking.
-
@inplsartist this is an excellent observation. i found a little band called Birdville High who ended a 4 part Stravinsky program with segments of Act II, closing with the Danse Sacrale...on the whole, nothing as grande as Pomona...but they finished with that understated almost anti-climactic finale of The Rite of Spring and it was perfect. Everything the Firebird isn't in a finale...and they didn't include the Firebird in that program either...
-
you guys were only .1 away from making semis :(( and you would've made it if they had taken 12 bands into finals instead of 10!
-
im a freshman now, yeah the right of the machine one is really awesome. one of the drum majors tim vialpando is my english teacher
-
I wish somebody would upload the 2000-2002 seasons! That City Sketches one was so good!
-
the original Rite of the Machine was was even more dark, it was banned because people thought it had to do with Satanism and Nazi, so they had to change it
-
I love being in the Pomona marching band knowing that its one of the best and most successful Marching bands around. Its a shame that the original Rite of the Machine Isn't on youtube and couldn't be apart of Finals
-
doing bandcamp and during school
-
The whole production was much darker than the one brought to nationals this year. After the state compatition they were forced to make changes after a rival school claimed it was satanic. True story.
-
i cant imagine doing two shows in one year... howd you all pull it off?
-
I do love marching bands. But it is impossible to compress an hour of Stravinsky's rite of spring and make it sound genuine. It was sensory overload. Would of been better with the arranger , and director only choose to do at least just one of the two acts and study the work and the choreography of the original production. I feel as an artist both visual and audio it the whole performance should have been more dark and complex.
-
@Wilburf: The show was changed because it was criticized as being too dark and not widely accepted by judges. If anyone has the PomonaFest tape you will get the earlier version. we wore black masks in the show. Good show though.. one of the hardest pieces of my 4 years there.
-
Anyone know why they changed the show mid season?? I like this version, but i'm curious to see the "rite of the machine" version.
-
You were a legend Dill...I was a frosh in 99...but you were already a legend.
Drummajor 01 and 02 here whoop whoop
-
Dill!! Post them
-
This was ten years ago!?!?!? My name's Sean everyone knew me as Dill and I was the machine in the original version of this show. I have some crappy copies of the original version if anyone's interested. "I am the machine. I am the center of all industry and technology. I was created by the human race to perfect the world. And I accomplished this by ridding it of humanity.
-
best band ever, my old school
-
rite of the machine was cooler
The Rite of Spring did NOT open with a saxophone...
trumpetdemon 4 years ago
Yes, this is true. As you can see this is a high school marching band, not a symphonic orchestra. Since it is a marching band the piece was adapted to include woodwinds such as the sax. Which in my mind makes it all the more impressive, the band takes symphonic music and presents it on the field, this is not your normal high school marhcing band which play's half time show tunes at the Friday night football game. The band is recognized as one of the elite programs in the country still today.

What year was this?

This was 1997, the State show was revamped for nationals at the recommendation of national judges, but they still did not give credit by putting the band through to finals. That was a year of two shows. Both were great...
