(I recommend listening to all five songs, in sequence.)
Berg: Five Orchestral Songs, op. 4, No. 1
Seele, wie bist du schöner, tiefer, nach Schneestürmen.
Auch du hast sie, gleich der Natur.
Und über beiden liegt noch ein trüber Hauch,
eh' das Gewölk sich verzog!
Soul, how much lovelier and deeper you are after snowstorms!
You have storms, too, like Nature.
And over both still lies a dim haze,
as the clouds slowly unwind.
Bethany Beardslee, soprano; Robert Craft conducting
the Columbia Symphony Orchestra
Recorded in 1960 by the performers of the American premiere.
Bethany Beardslee possessed a wonderful voice with considerable power when needed - seems like many years ago I had a record of her singing "conventional music" - could it had been Handel - ? - great transfer! - probably better than we'd get on a major label

@gnativerson
Thanks for the compliment. I'd still rather Sony would reissue it, along with all the old Columbia recordings by Robert Craft.

This is quite exceptional. As far as I know, it was never re-released on CD. So did you transfer it from your old LP ?

This recording disappeared from the catalog before the CD was invented; no CD was ever released. As for the source, I digitized the LP, then spent uncounted hours on my computer, taking out the clicks and pops with audio editing software.
Enjoy!
