This is a song that I got from a very loving friend from Florida, his name is John, I thought I would share one of the very precious recordings from this church, may God always bless all the churches, all your loved ones, and always think of me and my family whenever you are praying!

O Sing to me of Heaven (page 60 - New Baptist Songbook 2007)

O Sing to me of Heaven.
When I am called to die.
Sweet songs of holy ecstasy.
To waft my soul on high.

CHORUS:
There'll be no sorrow there.
There'll be no sorrow there.
In Heaven above where all his love.
There'll be no sorrow there.

When cold and sluggish drops.
Roll off my marble *dying* brow.
Break forth in songs of joyfulness.
Let Heaven begin below.

When the last moments come.
O, watch *sooth* my dying face.
To catch the bright seraphic gleam.
Which o'er my features play.

Then to my raptured ear.
Let one sweet song be given;
Let music charm me last on earth,
And greet me first in Heaven.

Then round my senseless clay.
Assemble those I love,
And sing of Heaven, delightful Heaven,
My glorious home above.

  • I just love this song. I can remember singing this at church in a little bitty 1 room building, in July, when the heat was sweltering. Beautiful!

  • Growing up speaking Scottish Gaelic, and going to a Gaelic Church I have to say this is very similar to how hymns are sang in Scottish Gaelic.

  • @Forysan It dates back to the 1600's as far as I can find. This is from one of the churches me and my family go to and we still sing like this on alot of the east coast.

  • Iv been to this church

  • @musicalidea no it's called Lined Out hymn & until the invention of Sacred Harp/Shape Note was the predominent form of hymnology from the earliest days of Christianity (you can find virtually the same call & response style sung today in the Ethiopian Orthodox Church, one of the oldest Christian communities in the world). So the style dates at least to the Dark Ages.

  • thanks. i kept on digging and found all of the words sung here on a sacred harp website.

    blessings
