I had heard of this chapel some years ago, but did not know it was in Santa Fe. If I get the chance, I will try to see it when I pass through this spring. thanks for sharing.
Not a stupid question at all! Today, no one is allowed to climb the stairs, but It was fully functional until the chapel became more of a museum than anything else. The staircase was first built so that the sisters would be able to climb up to the choir loft. Inside the chapel you will see many pictures of the sisters on the staircase and many wedding pictures with the wedding party on the staircase. I think they don't allow people on it anymore so that they can preserve tis amazing wonder!
I visited this chapel today and felt a sense of peace and happiness that moved me beyond words I will be returning with my fiancé

Do a google search for "Loretto Chapel skeptic". You'll see that magic need not apply in this case.

no thats backwards.. the story tells of a man with a wooden hammer and the wood was dipped in water, Supposedly. I think, it was St.Joseph.
