Summary: AU. I'm trying to use Michael and Maria to convey a message about one of the staples of high school: popularity. Maria is one of the popular girls. She has friends (Isabel, Tess, Liz), and guys (Max and Kyle), but she finds herself drawn to loner Michael. Michael works a job, survives a less than adequate home life, plays on the football team, and is an all-around decent guy. He wants Maria but always feels on the outside of her and her group of friends. Even though they are in love, Maria is so worried about what other people will think, and Michael hates that. Does love conquer all? Or does popularity?
