Did you just sync the events in time or is there an actual physics engine behind this (I mean, at least the simpler stuff, like the gears and the box that turns them on)

There aren't any physics at work, though I used expressions (equations in XSI that cause one object to drive another, so cogs will move at the correct speed).
There's hand-keying at work as well, and some animation along curves

This is sooo cool. how did you build this and how could you afford multiple tables to do it over and over again?
