Well im glad to know that you do have regrets of throwing them back.. And i know its not your choice to discard perfectly amazing edible fish. You make a good point about the eyes popping out.. i actually have no answer to that question.. thats something i'll have to look into.. The bladders .. supposedly heal rapidly.. so after a day or so .."SUpposedly".. they can maintain there depths correctly.. But the eye thing i must look into.. but i still suggest trying to vent them..

Oh, and this was 500 feet down...

Do you really believe that? That's as corny as OFW handing out flyers suggesting to attach a weighted barbless hook their lip to send them back down.
Lead is too expensive to make someone feel like they are doing the right thing, when we know darn well, the fish is just out of site, and dying at the bottom instead...
I've emailed Don Bodenheimer on this subject venting my frustration of throwing back dead fish, especially when they taste so good.

You know you can poke a tiny hole in the air bladders, of those yellow eye snappers and give them a chance to survive. If you just toss em over the side they drown.. they cant right themselves with the swollen bladder.. Its cruel to let em float away.. Its just as bad as the net boats and there "Bycatch".. Give them a chance
Up to 400ft or more ..most fish electric reels for the really deep fish..some fish to 1000ft for tilefish..or oil fish around the rigs ..

After you puncture the air bladders, if they make it back down alive, do they lose the ability to move back up the water column - or are they destined for crab bait?
Also, what about their eyes popping out of their heads? That can't be good for their vision, even if they make it back down - again crab/octopus/shark bait?
I appreciate the debate, but it still makes me sick throwing them back...

Your right... Ignorance is bliss....... The fact that the Attempt of Venting a fish seems like rubbish to you.. It works here in Florida.. For deep water Grouper and Snapper.. But you decide its rubbish instead of giving it a try.. Look it up online if you dont know how... Or just keep wasteing fish.. and when there is nothing to catch but the skunk. maybe youll figure out that your ill effects to make any attempt in conservation may have played a part ... Every little bit helps..
