They were both hits at the same time, here in the UK, at least ... circa 1978. IIRC, The Jacksons version was the bigger hit of the two, for obvious reasons.
This dude can sing, but c'mon, now; MJJ & Co. helped this song out . . . A LOT. Went from corny to cool / funky to funkyfresh. Shame this guy didn't get the proper credit, but Thank God for The Jacksons LOL.
