  • Hoover made a grievous mistake by meddling into the economy and his meddling was continued on a more massive scale by FDR, thereby prolonging the Depression by 15 years. Warren Harding inherited a Depression from the appalling Woodrow Wilson, did nothing and the Depression went away in 8 months! Hoover was one of Wilson's "wonder boys," completely out of his depth as President, and NOT a true Republican.

  • @whizbang47 you really think he has the fault of this? Calvin Coolidge entered office in March4 1929/ 24 October the Stock market crashes. Who is responsable? THE MAN THAT IS IN GOVERNMENT AT THE MOMENT!! My god, you people never think things straight.. You always just blame the man, who's the easiest to blame, but never really think about HOOOW things happen the way they do.. Sad:( . Obama may now win the next elections because he killed Binladen, i mean what the fuck?!

  • you the man hoover

  • the die was cast, concerning the great depression, in 1925 and 1927 when the federal reserve decided to try a gimmick to bouy the european economy during the period after versailles--hoover obstructed the 1925 attempt, but was doing flood relief when the 1927 measure was ninja-enacted; his presidency was heroic but fated upon the instability of world markets and problems not solely of american making.

  • @taylorsurfer You'd better do some more in depth research; Hoover's socialist meddling helped to prolong the Great Depression. Warren Harding and Calvin Coolidge were true free market presidents; WIlson left Harding a Depression that only lasted a short time because Harding didn't interfere. Socialist/Statist "historians" have re-written history to exalt those presidents who went on wild spending sprees, curtailed civil liberties, and involved us in unnecessary bloodbaths,

  • Hoover supported much less spending than he was pressured to, and way less than FDR. The deficit was not so much a result of spending as much as of overly radical income tax cuts in the early years.

  • Everyone should know that it was not any President that caused the Great Depression. Hoover most certainly did not. His policies may have helped prolong it, though FDR;s did as well. I just wish that the average person knew more about the Great Depression other then "Herber Hoover caused it" " Hoovers fault" etc. This man meant well. He thought he could take it on just as he did with many humanitarian relief projects he was so good at handling. Probably the best this country or world has seen.

  • The economy should run itself. With that said however, Hoovers biggest downfall, his biggest failure as President was signing the Smoot-Hawley Tariff Act which was supposed to help farmers but in fact hurt them in the longrun. What it was, was basically cutting off trade with other nations. Some nations boycotted anything US. Trade decresed almost 40%, when all along trade would have righted the economical ship. Other then that, he was a good man and good Pres, with good intentions.

  • No! -- Hoover gave BILLIONS in federal subsidies to manufacturing industries, farmers, and states for infrastructure projects. He supported wage freezes and encouraged employers in the manufacturing industries to shorten work weeks rather than lay off workers. But these efforts failed to help most workers. Hoover only refused to give money DIRECTLY to individuals. He raised taxes in 1932 because the government was broke from all the subsidies it gave away. Try reading history, please.

  • hoover was a bit of a tool, as he believed (as most republicans did) that the economy should run itself and that was one of the reasons for his downfall as well as his handling of the bonus army.
