Traditional Irish reel (one of my favourites) played on wooden (cocuswood) simple system (8-key) concert flute, Rudall & Rose #4683 (with "Patent Head"), made c1843 in London.

  • good tune!

  • Thanks Josh. Cracker, isn't it? I should probably have another shot at recording it now and dealing with some of the issues David rightly pointed out......

  • I think it is a very pleasing performance.

  • Very kind of you. Thanks.

  • Too fast. A perfect example of a man with good technique who is unable to use it properly because of the speed. The second time through is better but still, the tune lacks lift and rhythm. The tone suffers because of this and the breathing is out of sync with the beat. It could be lovely but it isn't.

  • Thanks for viewing an commenting David. I certainly acknowledge problems with various aspects of my technique in this and my other clips - tone-production, breathing, consistency of timing and rhythm...definitely. The more I look back to it/them the less satisfied I am with most of 'em! However, I totally disagree they're down to speed - I'd probably have the same issues if I played it much slower - they're not due to trying to rush, and I don't think this is an excessive speed for a reel.

  • Excellent stuff Jem,

What a great reel, and played very well.

The flutes amazing I've got to say.

  • Hi. Thanks for your comment. I've had my R&R since 1984 and got it from the late Paul Davis who was THE flute and concertina dealer until his death, and whom I met by utter chance, but that's too long a tale for here.

  • MAN! whered you get a old ruddle and rose!?! thats amazing!
