He is in kidney failure and the dialysis access on his arm is oozing.

  • the proper term for dialysis access for haemo dialysis is called a fistula

  • I know the term fistula, but from what it looks like on his arm and its position, it can look like Carter has a graft rather than a fistula. Also in the episode, Dr. Banfield refers to it as a 'shunt', which is not a term commonly used for dialysis access... Too bad the writers didn't go with some proper terms to inform the audience.

  • A 15 year running show is ending, which had supurb actors as regulars and guest stars and great storylines. And all your concerned with is that the writers did not get the terms right? Where is your brain .....?!?!

  • Yep, 15 years of a show which was applauded for its medical accuracy and most of the time praised by "real" doctors for its realism. That's a big part of the history of the show. And the terms they use is by far not "all I'm concerned with" (Where is your brain to read that in what I said?). But there are thousands of people who walk around with a huge vein on their arm for dialysis (sometimes kids being laughed at for that) and I think using the proper term could have educated people better.

My father got a graft when he went in for dialysis. The doctors sometimes referred to it as a shunt. As does my father from time to time.

  • If i was going to become a doctor i would have practiced medicine like Carter they say you should learn through a role modal you admire, ha, i know hes just a character.

So much emotion in these scenes i will miss ER.

  • Yep and three are in my family. It's sad. My mother just passed of renal failure and my grandfather passed of renal failure. So yes I do see the importance. But this is television and not real life,
