Longest train it can platform is 9 cars on the high level platforms. The longest MARC train an evening/morning 9-car all-bilevel train to Perryville has the motor (HHP-8) sticking out at the end. One of the low level platforms (trk 16) is used by the Cap. Ltd. (and MARC trains) and can platform probably 14 or so.

How can Union Station not platform a 10 car consist?

AWESOME catch! What unit was in the lead? I rode on an 8-car and it had two AEM7s
-
I know, what I'm saying is that the NEXT day this consist was used for 171. (Unless Amtrak has two different consists in use.)

damn that is a rare an super rare is is on my favorites the highest regional ive been on was an 7 or 8 car regional coming from boston the train was sold out

Usually if they're deadheading a cafe, they put it in the back of the train.
-
it might be deadheading

It was so big, it needed 2 cafes. Great catch, this is in my favorites.
I RODE ON THIS EXACT SAME CONSIST!
On Monday the 7th I rode Amtrak 171 from PHL to WAS, after taking NJT/SEPTA from NYP. I was very surprised when I saw how long the train was. I couldn't believe my luck! In addition to the two cafes there was a second business class car adjacent to the second cafe. At Baltimore the last car (where I rode) barely platformed, and was off the platform at most other stations, including DC.
