My Mom used to sing this to my babies (now 31 and 29). RIP Mom, I know you are up on the roof, watching over us. You were so cool to love my songs and my generation. I was blessed to have you as a Mommy. The kids were blessed to have such a cool Mimi ---- sorry they lost you in '86. They missed you as they grew up. I miss you, but this song stays in my mind .. you stole it from my Carole King album and now it's "My Mom's Song" to me. See you on the roof.
Love, Sis

On this day in 1975 {May 16th} the Drifters performed "Up On The Roof" on the NBC-TV program 'The Midnight Special'...
Thirteen years earlier on November 3rd, 1962 it entered Billboard's Hot Top 100 chart; eventually it peaked at #5 and spent 20 weeks on the Top 100...
It reached #4 on Billboard's Hot R&B Singles chart...
Three covered versions have charted on the Top 100; Cryan' Shames {#85 in 1968}, Laura Nyro {#92 in 1970}, and James Taylor {#28 in 1979}
R.I.P. Rudy Lewis {1936 - 1964}

Wow. What a wonderful arrangement and performance. I won't hate on popular music today, but, wow... what, 30 years later? Thank you, Ms. King and Mr. Taylor, for your talent, your dedication, and (did you see JT take off hopping) your JOY. It's infectious, and it's downright GOOD.
