The video speaks for itself, you need to pick your apples at the correct time, not earlier, not later. Knowing when to pick depends on study and observation and experience. You will have to work this out for yourself where you live.

  • Well done, as usual, Dr. Hayes! Nice crop of L.E.'s. Also excellent advice on pasteurizing juice from the fallen apples. I believe that pasteurization is required or strongly recommended for all sweet cider sold in the U.S.

  • We do make juice from PICKED, WASHED fruit to sell within 24 hours as unpasteurised juice. It has much more flavour than pasteurised juice and can be refrigerated and used with 3 days, or frozen.

Apples which fall on to grass are OK if washed, if there are sheep or chickens in the orchard its more of a problem. Apples which have fallen on to earth can be pressed for juice to ferment to hard cider, sometimes we offer the better windfalls cheaply for cooking and preserves

  • Before anyone asks, the backgound music is a record of lute music on the car's CD player. I like to listen to music in the orchard.

  • lol right, I was wondering about that.

Great videos, haven't missed one! Looking forward to applying your knowledge in an old abandoned orchard.

  • Good advice!

    Five Stars my friend!
