Nobody thought to test the runoff from the proposed new artificial turf in San Francisco's soccer fields until 10-year-old Claire Dworsky came along to do the research...and point out that the runoff threatens sea-life.

Our organization, Viking Soccer Parents for Grass Fields in Golden Gate Park, also appreciates this excellent research. We will be citing Clair's research findings when we provide sample vials of tire particles which have leached up to the surface in the South Sunset fields to the City Supervisors. This is to help them better understand our concerns before Tue.appeals vote. We are suspecting it is the high levels of zinc in these industrial waste materials which may be causing this effect.

Great short summary of Claire's research and the issues involved. It's sad that San Francisco's planning department put nowhere near as much effort into understanding the issues involved as a 10-year-old science student. We deserved an honest and unbiased assessment of the available research and the possible risks. What we got was a whitewash that relied heavily on assertions by manufacturers of artificial turf.

Thanks Jim Parks and Today's Green Minute!

An important MUST SEE YouTube video clip for communities who use SBR artificial fields.

Dr. Adina Paytan and Claire Dworsky did the most comprehensive study to date of the run-off from artificial and natural turf fields. The reults need urgently need to be more widely known. We look forward to seeing the full results published (to date they have only been published in abstract form).

The Beach Chalet soccer complex destroys a major grassland in Golden Gate Park by removing over seven acres of living grass and replacing it with artificial turf and SBR rubber. It installs 150,000 watts of sports lighting, lit until 10:00 pm every night. Bright lights affect birds and other wildlife and will ruin the wild beauty of Ocean Beach for visitors at sunset and the Dark Sky at night. Write letters. Come to the BOS Appeal Hearing at 4:00 pm , July 10th, 2012. SF Ocean Edge
