"Let's stop welcoming undocumented immigrants"
Moderator: John Hockenberry Speaking for the motion: Vernon M. Briggs, Jr., Mark Krikorian and Heather Mac Donald Speaking against the motion: Daniel T. Griswold, Enrique Morones and Karen K. Narasaki
IQ2US marks the launch of Oxford-style debating -- one motion, one moderator, three advocates for the motion, three against -- in New York City. Each evening begins at 6:00P with a complimentary cocktail period. As you enter the theater before the debate starts at 6:45P, you cast your vote for or against the evening's motion. Those results are displayed midway through the debate as each side makes its statements. After all six panelists speak, the audience has a chance to ask the speakers questions and vote again. The debate finishes with brief summations from the panelists, the votes are tallied and a winning side is declared.

to me atleast the anti immigrant is out of touch with reality...you heard her say (mcdoanld) "We have not tried to enforce it"... we have been trying to it doesnt work...she is out of touch...i wish i was in this debate
crazycoolone - Nobody on the panel acussed the anti-undocumented immigrant crowd of being racists. Even Enrique Morones (who is oftentimes labeled as a "brown supremacist" by folks in the Minutemen crowd) acknowledges that many people who are involved in anti-immigrant activism are not necessarily them seves racists but he does try to show how the policies they advocate effect immigrants their families and society at large.
I think that this was a good debate, but I saw a definite imbalance in the two sides. The side that opposed the illegal immigration (undoc. workers) didn't strike me as racists people, but made clear, defined arguments of why the US should not allow undoc workers in. The other side was far less specific and depended on emotional arguments to hold weight. If I could work in England being a US citizen & get paid in British pounds, I'd buy my ticket YESTERDAY! It's all about economics!!!
I disagree with your assesment. The pro-immigrant side made clear that they're not in favor of illegal immigration but specific policy changes to allow a fair amount of LEGAL immigration and allowing honest hard working immigrants who are already here the chance to establish themselves legally. Many on the right who want to deny most or all undocumented immigrants this opportunity don't like to highlight is that they are for reduced immigration *period*. Vernon Briggs was less shy about that...
"Nobody on the panel acussed the anti-undocumented immigrant crowd of being racists"
I meant to say that nobody on the panel (or in these comments) accused the anti-undocumented immigrant panalists of being racists. It seemed to me that you'd implied that someone had.
Look dude... calm down will ya? I help undocumented people find work & make sure they are fed... As far as I'm concerned people are people. My problem is that they SEEM to ALWAYS show Mexicans as the ONLY undocumented workers in the US when they CLEARLY are NOT; I know Canadians, Australians, Spaniards, and Brits who have student Visas that have LONG expired yet are still in the US. I LOVE GOOD people. The spin is wrong.
Morones is against the Bracero program. So the guy to his right is in conflict with his views. Morones has critizised the Bracero program on his radio show.
