What he is doing is singing very softly in falsetto or head voice (think Bee Gees style). Regular practice and vocal training can get you there.

Just wow! A sweet rendition. My favorite song from this performance. Paul has said this was the first of the great Beatles songs. John may have disagreed; regardless, it is a wonderful song that evokes so much yearning. Timeless. I recall this song well from my youth.
