This is a digital portrait tutorial I created of Scarlett Johansson, using Corel Painter software and a Wacom pen tablet. I used reference to create her likeness but added my own art style for her hair and kept the background simple. In this tutorial, I go through the steps of how I create a digital portrait using a few of the many powerful brushes found in Corel Painter.
*Note: I use one layer to paint my portraits just like in traditional art. This is especially necessary when working with certain brushes such as the digital watercolors or tinting brushes, which create undesired effects if painted on a new transparent layer. Painting on one layer also helps in honing my painting skills and forces me to commit & make corrections in my paintings which in turn creates a learning experience every time.

I'm trying to get the Wacom Bamboo Create tablet. This my be a dumb question but I've never done any digital art. How are you supposed to get better at digital art? Do you just keep trying to draw random stuff and add color or something? I'm not very good at drawing on paper and even if I did draw something good I didn't really like the color to it. Because of the pencil lead and stuff. Is digital art easier at all? I've noticed that alot of things look better using digital art.

@Randall8808 Digital art can be easier than drawing with pencil & paper since it gives you the chance to quickly undo your lines. But it still helps to practice on paper. I would do both, and it will improve your skills over time. The Create tablet comes with Painter Essentials - watch as many videos as you can, they all teach something different. Good luck!

@JSolorzanoArts1 Also, how long did it take you to get good at digital art?

@Randall8808 It took a few months to get used to using the tablet and also the program - there's lots of brushes to work from.

At what canvas size do You usually start sketching and painting? What is the appropriate size for portraiture?
sandeep1233 2 months ago
@sandeep1233 I usually go with sizes that can be framed, such as 8x10, 11x14, 16x20, etc., but I normally stick with 8x10 at 300 resolution. It depends what size you want to print it at to put it in a glass picture frame or poster frame. 8x10 is a good size so it doesn't use too much computer resources.
