The American Basketball League, a professional sports league for women, only lasted a little over two seasons from 1996-98, but it broke new ground. This documentary, made in 2000, tells the story. Part 1 of 3.
I taped this off a KQED broadcast almost 10 years ago. The film seems to have disappeared, and I can't find it available for purchase anywhere. I contributed about half the footage of the HoopSalute game at the end of the film. I'm posting it on YouTube because it's important that the ABL not be forgotten, it was an important groundbreaker in women's athletics.
I'm a guy and I did watch the ABL when it operated. I really liked the league and the quality of basketball played. It was sad that the league folded, because I feel it was better than the WNBA. The challenge for all women's sports, especially pro leagues, is to get the casual fan to watch the product on the field/court
