One dog, Nora, was found crawling around in the mass grave 20 minutes after he had dumped her body into the pit. Others were chased, shot cleanly or died after their throats were slit. The employee, according to the report, was "covered in blood" when finished.

http://www.theprovince.com/news/Massacre+horrifies+shoots+sled+dogs+execution... The dogs were buried in a mass grave.

According to the report, on April 21, the man wounded one dog - Suzy, the mother of his family's pet dog - who managed to run away despite having the left side of its cheek blown off and an eye hanging from its socket. A rifle with a scope was used to kill her from a distance; that bullet passed through her and seriously wounded Poker, a dog that wasn't slated to be euthanized. It was later killed.

On April 23, one dog, who had part of its head blown off, attacked him after he ran out of ammunition. He killed the dog with a knife, slitting its throat while it was on top of him.

The report said the man, who had named and raised many of the dogs, has "continued to deteriorate mentally and emotionally" since the incident.

In a Dec. 27, 2010 posting on a website forum for trauma sufferers, a Whistler resident named Bob Fawcett, an award-winning dogsledder, wrote: "I've had a pretty horrible ordeal and actually figure I may be able to be a good sounding board for others . . . and it has pretty much destroyed my soul."

SPCA HAD BEEN CONTACTED PRIOR TO THE KILLING!
Senior animal protection officer Eileen Drever confirmed she was contacted last spring by the man but can't recall if it was in April or May. The cull happened on April 21 and April 23, 2010.

She said she first learned of the slaughter last Friday when the WorkSafeBC report became public, which provided details of the "execution-style" killings of the sled dogs and stated they were destroyed for economic reasons.

"What happened last spring is (the employee) contacted me and complained about some of the conditions of the dogs and I was supposed to go up there and check. I spoke to the owner Joey Houssian and he provided me with a copy of the veterinarian's report,"

She said she was satisfied with the vet's report and did not feel it was necessary to go to Whistler and do an on-site inspection herself.

Man who killed 100 B.C. sled dogs turned to soldiers for help with PTSD

VANCOUVER — Internet posts by a B.C. man believed to be behind the mass killing of 100 sled dogs suggest corporate orders were reason for the post-Olympic cull — and no efforts to find adoptive homes were made because the cull was done haphazardly as the business was under threat of folding.

In an online forum for soldiers who suffer post-traumatic stress, Bob Fawcett wrote earlier this month that "soldiers with PTSD could be the only people who could relate to what I have had to be put through."

Fawcett wrote that he was forced to sell his 15-year-old dogsled company in Whistler, B.C., to a corporation two years ago as a result of the economic downturn.

"They did nothing but complain about costs and were not willing to sell some of the herd because they wanted all the animals on deck 'in case' it was busy. We had 330 dogs. Most of them were raised by me and family," he wrote.

"I was told the company was going to fold unless we took drastic action. The drastic action would be the immediate disposal of half the herd. There is no more money and the owners would only continue on if we did the reduction and went with a new business model, less dogs, less costs."

Fawcett then wrote he "reluctantly agreed" to the job before describing the gory details also outlined in a workers' compensation board claim that came to light earlier this week.

"I guess I need people who have been to hell and have seen hell to understand how I feel and maybe be able to listen and share," Fawcett wrote to the soldiers. "Hope I can connect with some of you and help and be helped through PTSD hell."

  • Too many people are willing to jump up in protest for these animals, yet our shelters are still full of animals. And we have tragedies, like the recent Kadhafi killing spree, were hundreds of people are slaughtered and the powers that be sit back and watch. These dogs are more important? We have to spends almost $200,000 to dig them up to see if they suffered? Get a grip! The method of culling these animals is legal. We could have used that money to feed the LIVING animals already in shelters!

  • @chshamus3xw For the most part I agree with you. The SPCA is milking this. They will accuse people of abuse if their dog has some bad teeth. SPCA are Parasites.

The guy that did the killing developed physiological problems. That type of thing could make a person dangerous to society. I don't agree in jail time or charges against him.

  • although that man chose to do what he did it was mostly the company's fault. There was an intense ammount of pressureand if he didnt do it, someone else would. But this company that owns the kennels has been under investigation for a longass time or so I've heard.

There's hundreds of people that would have taken in the dogs and I myself work at a kennel and we dont have ENOUGH sled dogs this season...... half our kennels are empty

  • @Potatonaught My suspicion is they did not want competition to have the dogs. The employee who was also owner of the business at one time, was on the board of a sledding organization that could have helped in the search for homes for the dogs. It's possible he was a part owner at the time of the incident but I have not heard any clarification on that. I imagine you would have paid for good quality dogs. I question the employees sanity

  • omg i am sick from this news. i was eating at burger king when i read about this in the newspaper and i had to run to the bathroom to throw up my double cheeseburger with extra bacon (don't worry, I got another one). I will not tolerate animal abuse and so I signed the facebook petition.

  • @evilsnakes1 Sorry you got sick.

Great that you have such a heart for these animals.

  • I'm disturbed by the fact that some ppl involve religion in this story. I respect religious persons, but don't ever say God created these poor animals in order for us to make use of them! It's an unexplainable cruelty & also something that should have never happened.

Shame on you, for such a primitive behaviour! And those, like this basterd, who do such incredibly horrifying things, should suffer the same treatment. You are nothing more than cold-blooded murderers & the shame of the humanity!

  • @Admin4YT God created animals for humans to learn from them. They are like spirit guides that have unconditional love. People need to learn from them since human love is conditional. God hates killing of any kind. So for breaking one of God's laws and rules, this man is going to find out what the penalties are for breaking one of the commandments. Karma always pays it's dues. This man will live a life of torment now whether in this life or the next. He destroyed his soul and now lives in shame.

  • This is so bad. Dogs are happy and ready anytime to help man, and this is their prize? I mean really! There is no excuse to this. It's an unforgivable act. I am not a PETA nut, I just don't think that the happiest, most willing servants of men deserve this fate!

  • @chshamus3xw Are you SERIOUS? You find this acceptable??? You don't care about any dogs... anywhere. As long as you believe you can one-up it doesn't matter. The money matters though....right?

  • When I see as many dogs killed a year as there are unborn human children killed every year,...then maybe I'll raise an eyebrow. The problem is that the same people who want me to cry for the doggies, kitties, and seals, are the same mass murderers who legislation murders millions of human lives a year. So let the bull dyke, babykillers cry for their alpa female amacuas.

  • @evilsnakes1 Try not to hurt yourself over it. Most people on these boards are given the benefit of the doubt that they are saying what they mean. Obviously you're not one of them, so there's no point discussing anything with you when your childish attitude hinders intelligent conversation. But I do admit, you made me laugh. The entertainment value was there. You're welcome to come back and rally some more when you're all grown up. Cheers! ;)

  • @chshamus3xw

seriously, how could anyone take what i wrote seriously? painful.

  • ...My first post was ironic, but everything posted by me since has been outright moronic. Yes, obviously I am fucking with you.

  • You said, "Besides, humans are carnivores and we have to eat." Are you kidding me? Google...VEGETARIANISM. We DO NOT have to eat meat! We choose to. Just as we choose to many things in life. Dude, are you just fcking with? You seriously can't be that uninformed! Back to the sled dogs. Yes, it was sad. Probably necessary and most of all it was the owners decision to cull them, give them away, or whatever. Remember,(now if you do some honest research) many real working dogs don't make good pets!

  • @evilsnakes1 Please take the time to grow up! Judging by the comments above, you are pretty young. I'm guessing under thirty for sure. And you probably didn't spend much time on a farm because you truly have a city mentality. Just like many other animals, dogs were domesticated to make survival easier. It doesn't put them on an equal level with us by any means. And I'm sure if you were a little less narrow-minded, your girlfriend wouldn't have cheated on you and taken all your PS3 games. So sad

  • @evilsnakes1 If you had to eat what was available, you might consider almost anything. Then again, maybe you wouldn't. But I definitely would. The choice between starving and eating Rover would be a pretty easy one for me. A bullet to the head, is a legal method for killing an animal. Google hunting, I'm sure you'll find something on it. Hell, people hunt with bows and that's pretty slow death sometimes. Nowhere near as quick as bullet to the head. Personally, I think killing for fun is wrong.

  • @evilsnakes1 There is a difference in every specie, that's why we separate them into categories. Even individuals within a specie are different for that matter. Some people eat dog, some eat cows, and some eat pig. And it's not up to you or I to say what people have as a pet or eat based on the animals intelligence or someone's belief. (ie: religion, etc.) No, I don't eat dog. Not because.."I know the difference." It's because I didn't grow up that way. Otherwise, I may.
