"Rottnest" is derived from the Dutch "Rattenest," which means Rat's Nest. It is not Latin.

an animal named a quokka, native to a small island around 20km off the coast of western australia. the island is called "rottnest island", and is latin for rats nest - the people who discovered the island thought the quokkas were giant rats.
they are in the same family as the kangaroo. they carry their offspring in pouches on the front of their bodies.
