Nice video but you forgot to mention the last feather for the eye which would be jungle cock.

Hello , The reason I made that comment about the
color of the Gray Ghost, is because I was corrected at
My local material dealers shop...He spends a lot of
time with all the great tiers in Maine..I did not question
his Knowledge.. I purchased a lot of those colors.
I'll have to tell the boys at L.L. Beans'.
They still look nice.. L.O.L. Take care Steve

Stephen- The most complete listing as well as history and tying method is Carrie Stevens: Maker of Rangeley Favorite Trout and Salmon Flies. This book can be purchased for over $200 and is well worth the investment. It has over 100 of Mrs. Stevens patterns.

Steve, Now you have me going at it. I just read a letter from Mrs. Stevens to Mr. Bates. She clearly says that the first streamer she tied had Gray wing feathers to simulate a smelt as well as other hair in the wing. It does not say that this is "The Gray Ghost.". She goes on to say that this was the beginning of her fly tying. In the recipe it says Olive-Gray.

I just looked at the pattern and the wing color according to Bates is called Olive-Gray. I think when I purchased this hackle some 40+ years ago it was as close to the real thing as I could find. The color is very unusual. I would love to see an original.

Thanks for the comments. I used the pattern by Joseph Bates who was a personal friend of the Stevens and spent time with them. In his book Streamer Fly Tying and Fishing 1950 it uses white buck tail as part of the under wing. I did not tie the fly in the traditional way from a few points. Being that Mrs. Stevens did not use a vise, created the entire sides with wax and glue and used white thread under the body material. Missing the red band was just a bone head mistake by me.
