I don't think anyone is trying to impress anyone. I think they mean that because they are well off it behooves them to help out the less fortunate. It's the actual meaning of charity.

Audrey is carrying on the upper-class mindset of noblesse oblige. And it's not about impressing the tramp. It's about impressing the other upper-class farming gentry who sit and gossip about each other.
