The negotiations to establish common ground between Mugabe's ZANU-PF and the two factions of the MDC are locked in a stalemate. This should not surprise us because Mugabe attempted to negotiate from a position of power, and his demands of absolute control over government and various ministries were unacceptable to the MDC. Mugabe wanted recognition as the duly elected President of Zimbabwe along with control over defense forces and the central bank. It is believed he also wanted the authority to fire the Prime Minister a post, in all likelihood, to be held by Morgan Tsvangirai. He was prepared to give Mugabe the defense forces and the central bank, but was not going to hand Mugabe the authority to fire him. In such a negotiation, Mugabe would look to hang on to whatever power he can, while Tsvangirai will wants as much executive power as possible. Tsvangirai has faced Mugabe more in the last few days than he has in the decade long existence of the MDC and he reportedly told Mugabe that he is too old and should seriously consider retirement and spare the ordinary Zimbabweans.
