Rubies
Choreography by George Balanchine
© The George Balanchine Trust

A ballet in three parts, George Balanchine's Jewels was premiered by New York City Ballet in 1967 and was hailed as the first plotless full-length ballet. The gems in Jewels pay tribute to three golden ages of dance and also to the beauty of the ballerinas Balanchine adored. Rubies mirrors the carefree spontaneity of America, a throwback to the musical comedies and films Balanchine created soon after he arrived in his beloved adopted country: a sassy, jazzy burst of sunshine.

Performed by Melissa Hough, Connor Walsh, and Artists of Houston Ballet.

  • LOVE Rubies, nice dancing, but why so short a video? Would love to see the whole thing!

  • Ah what alluring ladys, and flamboyant choreography, too bad this is a rare show these days.
