What is Tesco's policy on muslim staff who do not want to stay at the cash desk, or fill shelves, when the products are pork or alcohol?

Hi newalbion, that's a great question.
The answer lies in knowing what the role you are applying for is all about if you are very religious. Religious colleagues I know don't have any issues when it comes to potentially 'sensitive' products or they would not have applied for the job.
It's like me being an atheist means I probably won't go for a job in a christian bookshop!

I understand as I am an atheist too. But in England there are certain supermarkets which allow the staff at a cash desk to discontinue ringing up the prices to get another colleague when "haram" (not allowed) products come up on the conveyor belt. As a customer, I would feel like I am being treated with contempt, as if I had bad breath or something. So there are "colleagues" who have applied for (and got) such jobs.

I guess it is a question of attitude. As Tesco we express this through a set of 'values', the most important of which is to trust and respect each other and our customers.
If you go in with the attitude that you are determined not to be offended if this happens (since the member of staff will certainly not be out to offend) then you'll both end up respecting each other and even have a 'feel good' experience.
