Im a Truck driver doing 52 mph on a motorway for hours at night is like doing 10 mph in a car in a 30 limit imagine driving like that in you car for up to 4 and half hours at a time Its boring and tiring. Companies now expect Drivers to do 15 hour shifts some nights , Government should ban working over 10 hours at night. There should be "NO " Option to work more than 10 hours as companies use Bully tactics to force drivers to work more than 10 hours with threats of redundancy etc etc .

PSV driver here, we tend to get looked after somewhat better. But VOSA/Police will always put blame on driver, no matter what.

I think you're right. People have become so detached and self absorbed that they think nothing of other drivers. There isn't even any for-thought given to possible consequences of their actions. I'm just a private motorist and I've discovered as I've gotten older, I can no longer drive for hours on end because I get extremely sleepy. So I no longer drive for more than a few hours at time. The consequences are just far more than I could live with if I dozed off and caused a serious accident.

If you are caught disconnecting the limiter you will face a heavy fine. I work for a company whose vehicles are all tracked. Our 3.5 tonne vehicles are limited to 75mph.

Drivers are put under more pressure to keep the wheels turning so they can earn more money for the company. The trucks have a tracking system so the supervisors know when the truck has stopped. if you have had to have a legal break but you still feel tired you will be put under pressure to keep going. Its not a surprise when the driver is falling asleep on the Motorway.

This sort of thing could be prevented by emergency fail safe systems like on trains which would save countless lives.and it is absurd why such technology which is tried and tested on the railways could not be adapted for road use.

It is easy to disconnect the limiter. You just remove a fuse. Many drivers in Australia will drive over the limit. Trucks in Australia older than 1993 do not have to be speed limited. If you have been down under you would have noticed that there are a lot of older cars and trucks on the road compared to the UK.In the UK the tachograph is used to monitor drivers hours and speed, that is why the trucks never exceed 90 KPH ( 56 MPH ) which is the maximum speed for trucks in the EU.

We already have the technology whereby cameras can watch the eyes of a person to determine where they are looking. Correlate that with an outward facing camera and feed the video into a system with an algorithm to detect driving quality (i.e. how quickly you react to corners or how well you are staying between the lines) and you have a fatigue detection system. We already have the technology so why isn't it in widespread use?

Will never happen. Mostly because you cannot say what the average working pattern of a taxi driver is. You can say that time spent on the ranks is rest time, for example. Some drivers do airports, some never leave town. It is very rare to hear of taxi drivers falling asleep at the wheel, at least where I live.

Legislation isn't considered necessary - if I was to drive for 10 hours straight and have a crash, or get pulled, I'd already be considered negligent in the eyes of the law.

How common is it to bodge the limiters over there? I drove Sydney to Melbourne once and I swear half the trucks weren't limited.

I always wondered about that. I'm a taxi driver and frequently do 18 hour shifts but that's a completely different experience (apart from your back going due to getting in/out constantly), you don't get tired at all.

Then I go on the motorway to do an airport and Gatwick from Devon and back is a real push. Not sure how you do it at 50-odd all day.
