Filmmakers Marlene Millar and Philip Szporer discuss 3D dance filmmaking, using visual examples of the production process from their current collaboration with choreographer Crystal Pite and the National Film Board of Canada. Moderated by Jacob's Pillow Scholar-in-Residence Maura Keefe.

Philip Szporer - Montreal-based freelance filmmaker, writer and lecturer, Philip Szporer, has worked extensively for CBC-Radio and Television, Radio-Canada, and served as correspondent for "The World", heard on Public Radio International. Co-founder, with Marlene Millar, of the arts film production company Mouvement Perpetuel in 2001, they have directed and produced a number of media projects, including the documentaries Moments in Motion, Raising the Bar: The Fresh Voices Project, and Byron Chief-Moon: Grey Horse Rider, the dance shorts The Hunt, a soft place to fall, Butte, and The Greater The Weight, 40, Falling, as well as adaptation of the multidisciplinary stage work, Quarantaine 4x4. Currently in development with the National Film Board of Canada and choreographer Crystal Pite is a stereoscopic experimental dance film incorporating animation. Philip was awarded the 2010 Jacqueline Lemieux Prize from the Canada Council of the Arts, a 1999 Pew Fellowship, National Dance/Media Project (University of California, Los Angeles) and teaches in the Contemporary Dance Department at Concordia University. http://www.mouvementperpetual.net

Marlene Millar - Montreal filmmaker Marlene Millar has been creating dance and art films over the last twenty years. In 1999 she received a Pew Dance-Media Fellowship at UCLA, and in 2001 founded the award winning arts film production company Mouvement Perpétuel with Philip Szporer. Their dance films and arts documentaries (Moments in Motion, The Hunt, a soft place to fall, Butte, Byron Chief- Moon:Grey Horse Rider, The Greater the Weight, 40, Falling & Quarantaine) are broadcast regularly on Bravo! Canada and are featured in festivals around the globe. She has taught filmmaking workshops at the National Film Board of Canada, Main Film, Concordia University in Montreal, Bowling Green University, Ohio, Centre Imagine in Burkino Faso, and at ImpulzTanz in Vienna. Ongoing projects include a 3D experimental documentary with choreographer Crystal Pite, a multi-platform dance series with Philip Spzorer and an immersive environmental installation. http://www.mouvementperpetual.net

Maura Keefe - Contemporary dance historian and dance writer Maura Keefe is a Scholar-in-Residence at Jacob's Pillow Dance Festival. She has led audience engagement programs at numerous locations including Princeton University, UCLA, the Goethe Institut, City Center and DANCECleveland. Her current research areas are the exploration of the choreography of talking dancing in contemporary dance and the relationships between dance and sports. Keefe has an MFA in choreography and performance from Smith College, and a PhD in dance history and theory from University of California, Riverside. She is the chair of the Department of Dance at SUNY College at Brockport.
